Overall this is a good pump. I have used several over the course of my two babies who I exclusively pumped for. This pump is small and compact and easy to bring to the office and such. The suction is good, similar to the spectra. Personally, I need the suction on the max setting to get fully emptied out (as I do for the Spectra). This pump is also very very quite which my husband loves when I am pumping before bed. Also love the parts set up. Just feels like less work and less pieces. More streamlined overall feeling which is a plus when you’re washing and setting up every 3 hours. Also, can probably connect and pump directly into Dr. Brown’s bottles. I haven’t tried it but they look like very, very similar sized openings. I would be surprised if they’re not compatible. So if youre using Dr. Browns and this pump, it could be a very good match.
Cons: only works while plugged in or with external battery pack. So if you want to be mobile while pumping this is not the pump for you.
Kind of easy for water to get into the tubing and down into the motor if you didn’t at the minimum shake off the water very well.
There is no screen so you never know how much time you have left or what suction level you’re on. This is annoying bc A) you’re chained to the wall and B) if you change the suction level during your pumping session the 30 minute timer restarts so I am externally keeping track of my pumping time or stopping when I see I don’t have anything else coming out/feel empty.
The bag and freezer bag that came with the pump are nice I think. I didn’t realize that it came with a separate4 bottle capacity freezer bag and ice pack for bottles so that was an appreciated benefit.

Got for someone that requested it on their registry. They were very excited!

This breast pump is made for mom’s that want to only pump they’re milk and not half the time breast other half bottle. It doesn’t make much noise, doesn’t hurt so long as you have the right size for you, and it automatically turns off after 30 mins. Love this as of yet!

Edit: this pump is amazing. I was able to double my milk supply and become an over supplier which I attribute to this pump. It’s been so great a month in!
Previously I purchased the momcozy S12. I wish I would have just got this one but the portable version. This is so much comfier and quieter. Also seeing larger output with this pump!

I love the fact that it has a battery port that you can add AA batteries. Helps keep from being stuck to the wall all the time. Attachments are super easy to clean.

I am a first time Mom and have been lucky to try 2 versions of the Medela pump already, the older stand alone version of the Medela Pump In Style Advanced (PISA) and also the backpack version of the PISA, so this will be my 3rd Medela pump. I pump 3-6 times a week now (I used to pump more often) and had the opportunity to use the new Medela Pump In Style with MaxFlow 2020 version in return for my honest review. I want to be as thorough as I can for those who are looking into a pump as I know its so overwhelming 🙂
The Pump: The pump itself is really appealing at first glance. Very compact compared to the PISA and much lighter. Is has a hard casing, as the PISA had a black bag or backpack that went around it and you could not take out the pump itself. I do not travel much with my pump, I mainly use it at home but I could imagine the new MaxFlow would be so much better for portability. It is quieter than the PISA however the noise never really bothered me as I am home pumping. It advertised that it increases milk volume 11% but I have yet to see a difference in my output, I am pumping about the same output as before. I think those moms that exclusively pump hopefully see that increase. Now the MaxFlow has 4 buttons that are while the PISA has a dial and a button. This makes it looks much sleeker.
Cons: The pump, like I said, looks awesome however there is no indicator on what suction level you are on. It has a ‘+’ and ‘-‘ sign but no window to show what number or suction you are on so you are left guessing or remembering ‘oh let me press it 5 times’. I much prefer the PISA where I knew exactly where to place the dial for my maximum output. Unfortunately, with the MaxFlow, I’m still trying to figure that out. I will say that the suction does seem weaker than my stand alone PISA that is 5-6 years old and as I noticed the same thing with my backpack version of the PISA. The suction seems to be getting weaker as the new versions comes out, I would think the suctions would get stronger or at least stay the same.
The Flages: The flages I can say are much better. They have this rubber around the rims that makes it much more comfortable for pumping. It comes with both a 23mm and 21mm which is nice to have the option instead of just the common size. I actually use a 19mm with my PISA, an off brand, and found that they do not make this size again for the MaxFlow so I use the 21mm and they seem okay, I think I would do much better with a smaller size so hopefully they will make those eventually.
The Tubing: The tubing is much better. There is a plastic piece that connects to the actual pump now which holds much better than the PISA, mine would slip off occasionally. It is thicker and seems more durable. Its easier to pump just one side if you need, all you do is disconnect from the pump and stick it in the ‘Y’ tubing area to secure the suction is closed. Now the only down fall I see with the tubing is it is a little shorter than I would like. I wish it had a few more inches to it to give me more range to do things as I sit and pump.
The Bag: I haven’t used the bag personally, but it looks nice and grey color is very neutral. It seems like the pump can fit with plenty of space for bottles or whatever else you need
The Connectors: Now this might be the biggest Con to me, and maybe because I’m a first time mom and I like to see everything that’s going on especially when I’m pumping, but they redesigned the whole connector. The membranes are much larger to prevent backflow which I have had no problems with. The biggest problem I see is that the connectors are a solid white color, not clear. I don’t know why they would change this. I mean it looks much sleeker and clean, so possibly that’s the reason but I like to see what exactly is coming out, how much, how fast, if I have a clog I like to see that its coming out and especially towards the end of my pump I like to make sure I pump it all out and now I find myself leaning over trying to see if I see any drops in the bottle. The tunnel where the flanges connect is much shorter which helps in blocking to see what is going on. I find myself pumping for a longer amount of time because of this, I was so used to seeing what is going on and now that I can’t I sit longer in hopes that I’m pumping it all out instead of knowing. So if you are one that likes to see exactly what is happening like me, you might want to take that into consideration.
The Powersource: It comes with both a wall connector and a portable battery pack. The portable battery pack takes AA batteries. I really wish it came with a rechargeable battery as I know some other pumps do. So possibly the next version with have that option.
Overall, this pump has improved. It is much more portable and compact compared to the PISA. I like that its not connected to a backpack, I hated that, and that it can stand alone. It more comfortable then the other, and really, comfort and function is most important. The biggest drawback that does not fully allow me to love it is that the connector is not clear so I can’t fully see what is going on. I think that is all preference though. If this were my first Breast pump I know I would love it, no question. I think Medela listened to their Mama’s and made changes that greatly improved this pump however I think a few more changes and it would be amazing.
